Seasons and Weather at Issyk-Kul: When to Visit

Issyk-Kul means hot lake in Kyrgyz: it is slightly saline and never freezes, even in winter. Thanks to this the shore is alive all year round, yet every season has its own character. Let us look at when it is best to plan a holiday at Issyk-Kul.

Weather in July and August

The peak of the beach season runs from mid-June to late August. In July the air warms to 28–32 °C by day, while the water near the shore stays around 20–23 °C — warm and gentle. Rain is rare and the sun is strong, so do not forget a hat and sunscreen. This is the best time for swimming, pedal boats and long evenings by the water — the shore is about a 10–15 minute walk from our Barsbek guest house.

The velvet season: September

The first half of September is a quiet reward for those who dislike crowds. The water still holds its summer warmth, the daytime air is 22–26 °C, and room prices are lower than at the peak. The fruit is at its ripest, the evenings are soft and the sunsets are especially beautiful.

Spring and early summer

May and the first half of June bring blossoming mountains and green gorges. It is still cool for swimming, but the weather is perfect for walks, trips to waterfalls and photography. This is a fine choice for a calm holiday and exploring the surroundings.

Winter by the lake

In winter the shore is quiet, the air is crisp and clear, and the surrounding mountains are covered in snow. Not far away, near Karakol, there is a ski resort. If you are after solitude and fresh mountain air, winter Issyk-Kul will surprise you.

• July–August — warm water, beach holidays;
• September — velvet season, fewer people;
• May–June — blossoming mountains, walks;
• Winter — silence, snow and skiing.

Water temperature month by month

Issyk-Kul warms slowly but holds its heat for a long time. In May the water is still bracing at around 12–14 °C, in June it rises to 17–19 °C, in July and August it reaches a comfortable 20–23 °C, and in September it stays pleasant at 18–20 °C. Even in October the brave keep swimming. Because of its depth and light salinity, the lake never turns icy.

What to pack

The weather by the lake is changeable: hot by day, then cool once the sun sets behind the mountains. Bring light clothes for the beach, a warm layer for the evening, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes for gorge walks. Sunglasses and a small rain jacket for a brief mountain shower will not go amiss either.
