Issyk-Kul with Kids: Where to Stay and What to Do
Families have long loved Issyk-Kul, and for good reason. The gentle entry into the water, warm shallows, clean mountain air and plentiful fresh fruit make the lake one of the best places for a family holiday in Kyrgyzstan. Here is how to plan a trip so that both parents and little ones get to rest.
Safe beaches
On the northern shore near Cholpon-Ata there are many sandy beaches with a gradual slope into the water — a child can splash for hours in the shallows under supervision. In July and August the water is warm and soft, and its slight salinity is gentle on the skin. The shore is about a 10–15 minute stroll from our guest house, so coming home for an afternoon nap and lunch is no trouble at all.
Things for children to do
- pedal boats, water slides and inflatable attractions on the shore;
- the quiet gated courtyard of the guest house, where little ones are always in sight;
- a water park and amusement park in Cholpon-Ata;
- horse and pony rides in the gorges;
- evening walks and hunting for shells on the beach.
Food for the whole family
Our dining room serves home cooking: porridge for breakfast, light soups, kompot and fresh pastries — guests often single out the breakfasts and generous portions in their reviews. If your child has particular preferences, the cook is always happy to make something simple and gentle. The produce is local and fresh, without too many spices.
Comfort and calm
The grounds are gated and quiet: a paved courtyard full of roses, with parking inside the gates, so children can play while parents relax. Families will love our Family room: a double bed plus a sofa, with a bunk-bed option for children — up to 4 guests in all. Every room has its own bathroom with a shower and hairdryer, a TV and a fridge. We will gladly point you to the nearest pharmacy and shop.
Health and safety
Mountain sun is deceptive: you can burn even on a cloudy day, so apply cream to your child every couple of hours, put on a sun hat and swim during the gentlest hours — before noon and after four. Teach children to drink more water and never to enter the lake alone. Cholpon-Ata has pharmacies, shops and a medical point, and we are always happy to tell you which is nearest.
What to pack for a child
- sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses;
- armbands or a swim vest;
- a light jumper for cool evenings;
- favourite beach toys and any usual medicines;
- a change of clothes and a towel for the water.
